recent change & Continuity in fiji
The National Council of Women, founded in 1968, has recently started a program which encourages greater political involvement for women in Fiji. This council has greatly influenced Fijian women, and there has since been an increase in the number of female headed households and there has been a slight destruction in the traditional family values, such as women being the children's main caretaker. Typically, females were socially segreated, but urban living has eroded this practice.
Fiji's traditional hierarchical system in society still exists and is still in effect. The Fijian islands are divided into different villages, each with a male chief as head of the village. He has the highest status, with his lineage and family coming in second.
