fijian non verbal communication: gestures & signs of respect
In Fiji, there is multiple gestures and things a person does in order to show respect. For example, footwear is to be removed and placed outside the house before entering as shoes are considered to be dirty and show a disregard for the house owner. Guests are then expected to pause before entering the house and to then sit near the door until invited to proceed further. Gifts are also expected to be brought. Sperm whale teeth (tabua) are considered to be the greatest gifts, and are given at marriages, funerals, and other important ritual occassions. Guests are then given kava to drink to promote solidarity between kins, friends and acquaintances. In villages, it is expected you remove your hat when in the chief's presence, as a sign of respect. It is considered dirty to touch a Fijian's head, and shows great disrespect. To say yes to a question, Fijians will typically raise their eyebrows to say yes.
